This is a 2-hour training on child abuse recognition and reporting for providers in New York. The training provides an overview of the child welfare system in New York, as well as clarification of important concepts related to the law that governs mandated reporters. The training also reviews responsibility for reporting suspected child abuse, including who must report and how to do it.

After completing this learning activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Recognize the key structures of the child welfare system in New York.
  • Recall the role as a mandated reporter of suspected child maltreatment.
  • List the skills to identify and report various forms of child maltreatment to the appropriate authorities.
  • Select ways to practice trauma-informed care (TIC) properly.
  • Identify adverse childhood experiences (ACES) and their effect on mental and physical health.
  • Examine implicit bias and its impact on healthcare.

Chapter 56
of the Laws of 2021 amended Social Services Law § 413 to require additional training to include protocols to reduce implicit bias in decision-making processes, strategies for identifying adverse childhood experiences, and guidelines to assist in recognizing signs of abuse or maltreatment while interacting virtually within the New York State Mandated Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect coursework.
